E. coli outbreak linked to raw milk from Wash. dairy
Grace Harbor Farms recalls some of its cow, goat milk

Cookson Beecher
Capital Press Staff Writer

An E. coli outbreak in Western Washington has been linked to raw milk produced at Grace Harbor Farms, a state-licensed dairy operation in Whatcom County, Wash.

The two ill children - a boy from King County and a girl from Snohomish County - both drank raw milk from the dairy. Testing done by the state's Health Department confirmed that the two cases were caused by the same strain of the bacteria, E. coli O157:H7.

On Sept. 29, the boy was still in the hospital recovering from the infection.

Tim Lukens, president and general manager of Grace Harbor, said a sample from the dairy's bulk milk tank tested positive for E. coli and that the sample was being retested by the Health Department to see if it matches the strain that sickened the children.

He expected the state's Agriculture Department to do additional sampling.

In response to the outbreak, Grace Harbor is recalling its half-gallon and quart-size plastic containers of raw goat and cow milk because the milk may be contaminated with E. coli. The milk in question has a pull date of Sept. 26.

The milk was distributed in several counties to a number of Whole Foods markets, PCC stores, as well as to Manna Mills Market in Mount Lake Terrace and the Community Food Co-op in Bellingham.

The farm's pasteurized goat milk, pasteurized yogurt and cheeses are not implicated in the recall.

In a Sept. 29 telephone interview with Capital Press, Lukens said he suspects that cow manure was the source of the E. coli and that cross-contamination may have occurred.

He planned to get rid of the dairy's four cows and was expecting someone to pick them up that day.

In the meantime, the dairy has discontinued all raw milk production until further notice and will pasteurize all of its goat milk.

The farm usually produced about 100 gallons of raw cow milk and 100 gallons of raw goat milk, as well as some pasteurized milk each week.

Driven by intense customer demand, the farm began selling raw milk last fall, at first only raw goat milk, but then later raw cow milk as well. It also continued selling pasteurized milk.

In the industry, Grace Harbor has a reputation for being extremely conscientious.

"They have consistently passed all of our inspections and met our licensing requirements," said Jerry Buendel, assistant director for food safety for the state's Agriculture Department.

Buendel also said that the farm has been very cooperative during the investigation.

Last year when 18 people became ill after drinking raw milk from Dee Creek Farm, an unlicensed dairy operation near Vancouver, Wash., Tim Lukens and his wife, Grace, were outspoken about the need for all raw-milk operations to obtain state licensing.

About 20 raw-milk dairies are currently licensed by the state.

"This has really been a shock," said Grace. "We're still trying to sort everything out."

Tim said they've been heartened by the outpouring of support they have received from their customers, many of whom buy milk and dairy products at the farm's store.

"They're eager for us to get this resolved and get our raw milk back on the market," he said.

But Tim said if and when that does happen, the farm will be dealing only with raw goat milk.

Lukens had to cut the interview short because a news helicopter was hovering over the farm. The previous evening, King 5 TV had visited the dairy.

This recent dairy-related outbreak is not associated with the E. coli outbreak that sickened about 180 people across the country who ate raw spinach from three counties in California.

It is, however, the second recent E. coli outbreak associated with raw milk. Last week, raw organic milk from a Fresno County, Calif., company was recalled and put under quarantine after it was linked to E. coli infections that sent three Southern California children to the hospital.

California's state veterinarian issued the recall on all whole and skim raw milk and cream produced by Organic Pastures Dairy Co. The quarantine was lifted Sept. 29 on raw whole milk, raw skim milk and raw cream for use in manufactured products like cheese. However, the quarantine was still in place for Grade-A fluid raw milk and raw cream.
