A missing person is a person who has disappeared and whose status as alive or dead cannot be confirmed as their location and condition are unknown. A person may go missing through a voluntary disappearance, or else due to an accident, crime, death in a location where they cannot be found (such as at sea), or many other reasons. In most parts of the world, a missing person will usually be found quickly. While criminal abductions are some of the most widely reported missing person cases, these account for only 2 to 5 percent of missing children in Europe. By contrast, some missing person cases remain unresolved for many years. Laws related to these cases are often complex since, in many jurisdictions, relatives and third parties may not deal with a person's assets until their death is considered proven by law and a formal death certificate issued. The situation, uncertainties, and lack of closure or a funeral resulting when a person goes missing may be extremely painful with long-lasting effects on family and friends. A number of organizations seek to connect, share best practices, and disseminate information and images of missing children to improve the effectiveness of missing children investigations, including the International Commission on Missing Persons, the International Centre for Missing & Exploited Children (ICMEC), as well as national organizations, including the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children in the US, Missing People in the UK, Child Focus in Belgium, and The Smile of the Child in Greece.

According to current statistics, 4,000 people in the United States go missing every day. Sometimes a child suddenly vanishes from the bus stop or the local park or even from their own yard or bedroom. Or a teenager doesnt return home after a walk to the neighborhood grocery store or a bike ride or a party with friends. Other times, an adult is mysteriously absent from their job or neighbors havent seen them for several days, and family and friends havent heard from them either.

Details of Disappearance Barbara's husband of 37 years, Robert Franklin "Bob" Hoover Jr., stated she packed two suits of clothing and left their home in the 5100 block of Tamarack Street in Silver Springs, Nevada on the morning of September 11, 2003, while Bob was at the bank. She was reportedly depressed and angry because the entirety of her father's inheritance had been left to her brother.
According to Bob, Barbara told him she was going to the California coast to live with friends. He stated she took several thousand dollars and a year's supply of her bladder medicine with her, but did not take her car, a 1989 Pontiac Firebird. Within three weeks of Barbara's disappearance, Bob purchased a motorhome and went on a road trip through Nevada, California and Arizona.
Bob claimed he maintained occasional contact with Barbara after her disappearance; he said he spoke to her on the phone and met her at a Jackson, Nevada coffeeshop in 2004, and that she used his health insurance. He never produced any proof of these encounters, however. Bob said he believed her friends in Merced, California may be helping her hide. The couple lived in Merced for several years before moving to Nevada.
Barbara was reported missing by her son. She is described as a timid, reclusive woman, and her loved ones say it is uncharacteristic of her to leave without warning or to travel alone. Barbara's three children believe she was murdered, as it is uncharacteristic of her to be out of contact with them for so long; she kept in near-daily contact with them by phone.
Barbara was declared ly dead in 2018. In February 2019, Bob died at the age of 86. Barbara's remains unsolved.
