Information on the case from local sources, may or may not be correct : Alexander was reported missing by his brother from Virginia Beach, Virginia on December 17, 2000. When police questioned his wife, Michele Rene Smith, she said he'd driven away in her van, a white 1982 Ford with the Virginia license plate number YME 2039, on October 15. He never returned and she said she assumed he simply left her.
In 2005, Michele was charged with Alexander's murder. The charges were brought after an anonymous source told police she had shot him to death while he was sitting on a couch at their townhouse in the 3500 block of Windmill Drive. She then hauled his body away in her van, the same van Michele said Alexander was driving when she last saw him.
The anonymous informant told authorities where to find both the couch and the van, and the police recovered them. The couch had a bullet hole in it when they found it. A second source corroborated the shooting story.
Alexander and Michele began dating as teenAge at the time of disappearance: rs. She gave birth to his first child in 1989, while still in high school, and they married in 1993. They had a troubled relationship and a history of violent arguments. Michele had brought assault charges against Alexander before, but always withdrew them. Alexander was trying to bring an assault warrant against her at the time of his disappearance.
The case against Michele collapsed, however, after a grand jury found insufficient evidence to indict her. The charges were dropped and she was set free. Alexander's body has never been found.

The Virginian-Pilot
A missing person is a person who has disappeared and whose status as alive or dead cannot be confirmed as their location and condition are not known. A person may go missing through a voluntary disappearance, or else due to an accident, crime, death in a location where they cannot be found (such as at sea), or many other reasons. In most parts of the world, a missing person will usually be found quickly. While criminal abductions are some of the most widely reported missing person cases, these account for only 25% of missing children in Europe. By contrast, some missing person cases remain unresolved for many years. Laws related to these cases are often complex since, in many jurisdictions, relatives and third parties may not deal with a person's assets until their death is considered proven by law and a formal death certificate issued. The situation, uncertainties, and lack of closure or a funeral resulting when a person goes missing may be extremely painful with long-lasting effects on family and friends. Several organizations seek to connect, share best practices, and disseminate information and imAge at the time of disappearance: s of missing children to improve the effectiveness of missing children investigations, including the International Commission on Missing Persons, the International Centre for Missing & Exploited Children (ICMEC), as well as national organizations, including the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children in the US, Missing People in the UK, Child Focus in Belgium, and The Smile of the Child in Greece.
