Information on the case from local sources, may or may not be correct : Milowicki was last seen in Jacksonville, Florida on September 23, 2012. He took off from Herlong Airport off Normandy Boulevard in his four-seat Cessna 172B Skyhawk plane that morning, and never returned. He never returned and has never been heard from again.
Prior to his disappearance, Milowicki had told his pastor he was thinking of flying his plane into the ocean. After his disappearance, police found a suicide note in Milowicki's Ford Explorer, which he'd left at the airport hangar. A charter boat captain found a piece of the Cessna's fuselAge at the time of disappearance: in the ocean about twelve miles off the coast of St. Augustine, and a wing was located near Fernandina Beach.
At the time of his disappearance, Milowicki was estranged from his wife, a police officer. She'd gotten a restraining order against him after he threatened to harm her and himself, and the month before his disappearance, he was arrested for violating the order and held for two days before being released on bond. He had resigned from his job as a college administrator and said he planned to start a helicopter business.
Milowicki graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy with a B.S. in Aerospace Engineering and an M.A. in National Security and Strategic Studies. He served 28 years in the Navy, including combat deployment in Iraq, before retiring with the rank of Commander.
He is presumed dead, but his body has never been located.
