A missing person is a person who has disappeared and whose status as alive or dead cannot be confirmed as their location and condition are unknown. A person may go missing through a voluntary disappearance, or else due to an accident, crime, death in a location where they cannot be found (such as at sea), or many other reasons. In most parts of the world, a missing person will usually be found quickly. While criminal abductions are some of the most widely reported missing person cases, these account for only 2 to 5 percent of missing children in Europe. By contrast, some missing person cases remain unresolved for many years. Laws related to these cases are often complex since, in many jurisdictions, relatives and third parties may not deal with a person's assets until their death is considered proven by law and a formal death certificate issued. The situation, uncertainties, and lack of closure or a funeral resulting when a person goes missing may be extremely painful with long-lasting effects on family and friends. A number of organizations seek to connect, share best practices, and disseminate information and images of missing children to improve the effectiveness of missing children investigations, including the International Commission on Missing Persons, the International Centre for Missing & Exploited Children (ICMEC), as well as national organizations, including the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children in the US, Missing People in the UK, Child Focus in Belgium, and The Smile of the Child in Greece.

According to current statistics, 4,000 people in the United States go missing every day. Sometimes a child suddenly vanishes from the bus stop or the local park or even from their own yard or bedroom. Or a teenager doesnt return home after a walk to the neighborhood grocery store or a bike ride or a party with friends. Other times, an adult is mysteriously absent from their job or neighbors havent seen them for several days, and family and friends havent heard from them either.

Details of Disappearance Sullivan was a sophomore business major at Tennessee State University in Nashville, Tennessee in 1986. She moved from Gallatin, Tennessee with her three-year-old son and they lived with her boyfriend at Town Terrace Apartments at the time of her disappearance.Sullivan left her home that morning, dropped her son off at preschool, and then attended an 8:00 a.m. class. After class she stopped to visit a friend at a dormitory room in Hankal Hall on the university's campus. Her friend stated that she last saw Sullivan at approximately 10:00 a.m., when her friend left Sullivan alone in the dorm room to attend her own class.Sullivan had another class from 1:00 to 2:30 p.m., but never showed up for it. She was last seen walking near the university's Gentry Center. Her parents traveled to Nashville the next day to report her disappearance, after her boyfriend told them she hadn't picked up her son from his preschool and hadn't come home the previous night. The police suggested Sullivan had simply decided to drop out of sight for a few days and would return of her own volition. They allowed her parents to stay in her apartment and wait for her, which contaminated a possible crime scene. The maintenance man at Town Terrace Apartments in 1986 was friends with Sullivan; he is now in prison for rape and murder. He's considered a person of interest in Sullivan's disappearance, as is Sullivan's boyfriend, but authorities don't have sufficient evidence to bring charges against anyone or name any suspects.Foul play is suspected in Sullivan's ; she was very close to her parents and they don't believe she would have left without warning. She made good grades in college and paid her way through school with a job at Burger King. Her remains unsolved.
