A missing person is a person who has disappeared and whose status as alive or dead cannot be confirmed as their location and condition are unknown. A person may go missing through a voluntary disappearance, or else due to an accident, crime, death in a location where they cannot be found (such as at sea), or many other reasons. In most parts of the world, a missing person will usually be found quickly. While criminal abductions are some of the most widely reported missing person cases, these account for only 2 to 5 percent of missing children in Europe. By contrast, some missing person cases remain unresolved for many years. Laws related to these cases are often complex since, in many jurisdictions, relatives and third parties may not deal with a person's assets until their death is considered proven by law and a formal death certificate issued. The situation, uncertainties, and lack of closure or a funeral resulting when a person goes missing may be extremely painful with long-lasting effects on family and friends. A number of organizations seek to connect, share best practices, and disseminate information and images of missing children to improve the effectiveness of missing children investigations, including the International Commission on Missing Persons, the International Centre for Missing & Exploited Children (ICMEC), as well as national organizations, including the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children in the US, Missing People in the UK, Child Focus in Belgium, and The Smile of the Child in Greece.

According to current statistics, 4,000 people in the United States go missing every day. Sometimes a child suddenly vanishes from the bus stop or the local park or even from their own yard or bedroom. Or a teenager doesnt return home after a walk to the neighborhood grocery store or a bike ride or a party with friends. Other times, an adult is mysteriously absent from their job or neighbors havent seen them for several days, and family and friends havent heard from them either.

Details of Disappearance Nichols was last seen in the morning of June 8, 2004, at his residence in the vicinity of the 2500 block of east Parley Way in Salt Lake City, Utah. He was supposed to meet his ex-wife and young son for breakfast at a McDonald's restaurant in Midvale, Utah. He and his ex-wife shared custody of their son.
His ex-wife stated Nichols called them to say he would be unable to keep the appointment. He has never been heard from again. His girlfriend reported him missing on the morning of June 9.
Nichols's white 2000 Ford Ranger pickup was located in the vicinity of the 4800 block of south State Street in Salt Lake City on July 15, over a month after his disappearance, and was towed two days later. That location is just three blocks from the restaurant where he planned to meet his ex-wife and son.
Nichols's loved ones say it is uncharacteristic of him to leave without warning. There has been no activity on his bank accounts or credit cards since his disappearance, and no unusual activity on them in the months prior.

Nichols's ex-wife had filed for bankruptcy prior to his disappearance. She and her child moved out of the area two weeks after Nichols vanished and his family has lost touch with them. Nichols's ex-wife and son have since left the country, and she has been indicted for bankruptcy fraud. There is a warrant out for her arrest.
Nichols was employed as an air traffic controller for the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) at Salt Lake International Airport at the time of his disappearance. He is originally from northern Virginia and moved to Utah in 1998. He lived in the Parley's Way area, east of Salt Lake City, at the time of his disappearance, and enjoyed golfing.
Police stated there was no evidence of foul play in his , but both law enforcement and his family believe his disappearance is suspicious. His remains unsolved.
