A missing person is a person who has disappeared and whose status as alive or dead cannot be confirmed as their location and condition are unknown. A person may go missing through a voluntary disappearance, or else due to an accident, crime, death in a location where they cannot be found (such as at sea), or many other reasons. In most parts of the world, a missing person will usually be found quickly. While criminal abductions are some of the most widely reported missing person cases, these account for only 2 to 5 percent of missing children in Europe. By contrast, some missing person cases remain unresolved for many years. Laws related to these cases are often complex since, in many jurisdictions, relatives and third parties may not deal with a person's assets until their death is considered proven by law and a formal death certificate issued. The situation, uncertainties, and lack of closure or a funeral resulting when a person goes missing may be extremely painful with long-lasting effects on family and friends. A number of organizations seek to connect, share best practices, and disseminate information and images of missing children to improve the effectiveness of missing children investigations, including the International Commission on Missing Persons, the International Centre for Missing & Exploited Children (ICMEC), as well as national organizations, including the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children in the US, Missing People in the UK, Child Focus in Belgium, and The Smile of the Child in Greece.

According to current statistics, 4,000 people in the United States go missing every day. Sometimes a child suddenly vanishes from the bus stop or the local park or even from their own yard or bedroom. Or a teenager doesnt return home after a walk to the neighborhood grocery store or a bike ride or a party with friends. Other times, an adult is mysteriously absent from their job or neighbors havent seen them for several days, and family and friends havent heard from them either.

Details of Disappearance Johnsen Hughes moved from Hawaii to California in June 2020 and embarked on a solo camping trip. She may have planned to hike towards Yosemite.
She last had contact with her family on June 26, 2020, and was last seen near Johnson Meadows in the Sierra National Forest on July 4. The hikers who saw her then noted she was barefoot and had a bruise on her face, and offered to help her, but she declined any assistance. This is the last time anyone saw or heard from her.
On July 5, Johnsen Hughes's campsite was found deserted and in disarray, with her belongings scattered, as if her car had been emptied out carelessly. It's uncharacteristic of her her to leave her campsite in this condition. That same day, her silver Saab 9-5 was found in Chiquito Creek, less than five miles north of her campsite. It appeared as if it had crashed into a tree at a relatively low speed, less than 20 miles per hour, then rolled into the ravine.
There was a possible sighting of Johnsen Hughes on August 9, over a month after she was last seen; two hunters saw a woman leaving against a tree along Road 5S01 near Beasore Road, in the area of Chiquito Creek near Portuguese Overlook. The woman matched Johnsen Hughes's physical description except she was visibly thinner. She didn't appear to be distressed and didn't attempt to contact the hunters.
Johnsen Hughes is trained in wilderness survival; she had studied to be a park ranger in college. Her remains unsolved and the circumstances of her disappearance are unclear.
