A missing person is a person who has disappeared and whose status as alive or dead cannot be confirmed as their location and condition are unknown. A person may go missing through a voluntary disappearance, or else due to an accident, crime, death in a location where they cannot be found (such as at sea), or many other reasons. In most parts of the world, a missing person will usually be found quickly. While criminal abductions are some of the most widely reported missing person cases, these account for only 2 to 5 percent of missing children in Europe. By contrast, some missing person cases remain unresolved for many years. Laws related to these cases are often complex since, in many jurisdictions, relatives and third parties may not deal with a person's assets until their death is considered proven by law and a formal death certificate issued. The situation, uncertainties, and lack of closure or a funeral resulting when a person goes missing may be extremely painful with long-lasting effects on family and friends. A number of organizations seek to connect, share best practices, and disseminate information and images of missing children to improve the effectiveness of missing children investigations, including the International Commission on Missing Persons, the International Centre for Missing & Exploited Children (ICMEC), as well as national organizations, including the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children in the US, Missing People in the UK, Child Focus in Belgium, and The Smile of the Child in Greece.

According to current statistics, 4,000 people in the United States go missing every day. Sometimes a child suddenly vanishes from the bus stop or the local park or even from their own yard or bedroom. Or a teenager doesnt return home after a walk to the neighborhood grocery store or a bike ride or a party with friends. Other times, an adult is mysteriously absent from their job or neighbors havent seen them for several days, and family and friends havent heard from them either.

Markings and/or Distinguishing Characteristics Caucasian male. Blond hair, blue eyes. Matthews has a full, reddish-colored beard, and at the time of his disappearance his hair was long, past his shoulders, and often worn tied back. He goes by his middle name, Cody.
Details of Disappearance Matthews was last seen in the Fresh Pond area in Pollock Pines, California, near Highway 50, in the lower Sierra Nevada mountains, on June 6, 2014. The area is rugged and inhabited by large wild predators including bears and mountain lions. His family owned a cabin there.
He went for an afternoon hike, leaving his bicycle and other personal belongings behind at the cabin, and never returned. Heleft carrying only a water bottle, a hunting knife, a compass, his cellular phone and a bag of trail mix; he left all his camping gear behind. The last signal detected from his cellular phone was at 6:30 p.m. that day, near the south fork of the American River.
He has never been heard from again. He's described as an avid outdoorsman and adventurer who knew the area very well, and his parents believe he could have survived for an extended time period in the wilderness, even with the minimal provisions he had.
A few days before Matthews disappeared, someone broke into his family's cabin, ransacked it and stole clothing, jewelry, cameras, tools and other items. The damage and thefts combined added up to approximately $18,000.
The person(s) who committed the crime have not been identified and it's unclear whether the break-in had anything to do with Matthews's later disappearance. In September that year, a fire ravaged the area and burned down several residences, including the Matthews family's cabin.
Matthews has no history of leaving without warning. He was a senior anthropology major at the University of California at Berkeley at the time of his disappearance, and president of the university's Anthropology Undergraduate Association. He also belonged to the school's hip-hop club and rapped under the name MC Thor.
He graduated Etiwanda High School and had previously studied at the University of Northern Iowa and at Chaffey College, a community college in Rancho Cucamonga, California.
Foul play is not suspected in Matthews's ; authorities believe he had a mishap while hiking. An extensive search of the area turned up no sign of him and his remains unsolved.
